Welcome to Grade 5
Christian Easter Vector Art, Icons, and ...

Wishing the St. Gerard community a very Happy Easter season.

We held our parent meeting in regards to camp this past week.  We were very excited to have such a good turn out.  We are all looking forward to this year's camp experience in May.

In Language Arts, we continue with our weekly Spelling lessons, comprehension and handwriting assignments.  I encourage my students to practice the words in their weekly spelling that they had trouble with during our Pre-test on Monday.  We continue on in our Communicating Skills workbook.

In Social Studies we continue with our look at the First Peoples.  In their table groups, students discussed positive and negative reactions for when different culture groups meet.  Then as a class we recorded our findings.  A positive reaction would be that they become friends, and an outcome of this would be that they would share their knowledge.  A negative reaction would be that they couldn't understand each others language, which could possibly lead to arguments/fighting .

In Science we continued work in our new unit, Properties of and Changes in Substances.  Table groups were given 2 solids, 2 liquids, and 2 school supplies and were asked to describe them.  We went over the 8 properties/characteristics that can be used to describe a substance. Appearance, texture, smell, harness, strength,  flexibility, buoyancy, mass/weight.  Students took a trip around the class to fill in a chart describing objects that had a certain characteristic and objects that didn't.  For example, they needed to list 2 red objects, and 2 objects that weren't red.  They then picked an object in the classroom and described it with detail, and will see if their classmates can guess what it is.

In Math, we continue working on Place Value.  Students completed worksheets on identifying the place value and value of specific digits in a number. We began using division Mad Minutes to keep practicing our basic facts.  Increasing our problem solving strategies takes place year round.
